Why Lawn Aeration Matters in the Pacific Northwest
Kitsap County's wet winters and mild summers create unique challenges for homeowners trying to maintain a healthy lawn. Our clay-heavy soils are especially prone to compaction, which restricts root growth, limits water absorption, and leads to thin, patchy grass.
Aeration — the process of removing small plugs of soil from your lawn — is one of the most effective and affordable ways to revitalize your yard.
When Should You Aerate in Kitsap County?
The best time to aerate in the Pacific Northwest is early fall (September through mid-October). This gives your lawn time to recover before winter dormancy while taking advantage of the fall rains to promote deep root growth.
A secondary window is early spring (March through April), once the soil is no longer frozen or waterlogged. However, fall aeration tends to produce better results in our climate.
Signs Your Lawn Needs Aeration
Water pools on the surface after rain instead of soaking in
Grass feels spongy or the thatch layer is thicker than 1/2 inch
Heavy foot traffic areas are thin or bare
Your soil is clay-heavy (common in Bremerton, Silverdale, and Poulsbo)
It has been more than 2 years since your last aeration
How Aeration Works
A core aerator pulls small plugs of soil out of the ground, typically 2-3 inches deep. This creates channels for air, water, and nutrients to reach grass roots. The soil plugs break down naturally on the surface within a week or two.
What to Do After Aerating
Overseed immediately — aeration creates the perfect seed-to-soil contact
Apply a light topdressing of compost to fill the holes
Water regularly for the first 2-3 weeks to help new seed establish
Avoid heavy traffic on the lawn for at least 2 weeks
DIY vs. Professional Aeration
While you can rent a core aerator from a local hardware store, professional aeration ensures even coverage and proper depth. At Pacific Landcare Group, we include aeration as part of our seasonal maintenance programs for homeowners in Bremerton, Silverdale, Poulsbo, Port Orchard, and Seabeck.
